Ep.1/ Why every aspiring author needs a book coach

It took me probably ten years to write my first published book. It wasn’t because I was a horrible writer or because I didn’t work on it constantly. It happened that way because I didn’t know what I was doing or how to spend my time wisely.

LISTEN NOW

So you want to write a book. You have an idea that’s germinating or maybe it’s been growing for some time. And now you want to write it.

Or maybe you’ve been working on it for a few weeks, months, or even years and you’re not getting anywhere. You’ve asked other writers what to do and what you’re doing wrong, but they can’t tell you. Or maybe you’ve tried everything and you’ve Googled for tips and tricks and you’re still struggling.

It’s okay to struggle. And it’s okay to do it alone.

But sometimes the best thing you can do for yourself is to get help.

And that’s what a book coach is for.

What’s your writing journey?

It took me probably ten years to write my first published book. It wasn’t because I was a horrible writer or because I didn’t work on it constantly. It happened that way because I didn’t know what I was doing or how to spend my time wisely.

And I didn’t know what I didn’t know.

If I had to do it again, I could learn ten times more than I did in a year with three months with a book coach.

Writing a book isn’t easy. It’s blood, sweat, tears and so much time. People who expect books to be given away don’t understand how much of an author goes into each and every book they write. But you do. You know just how much of yourself you’re putting into this book.

And you still want to write it.

Then it’s good you’re here. Because everyone thinks of writing a book at some point in their life. They have an idea and think it would be a great book. Maybe they even sat down to write it or outline it. Usually, though, that’s about where the inspiration stops and self-motivation has to kick in.

So what makes you different from those people with ideas?

You’re actually trying to write this book, right? If you weren’t, you wouldn’t be here.

Somehow you’ve stumbled upon this blog for a book coach and you’re not quite sure what a book coach even is. But you’re curious about whether it can help you finish the story you want to tell.

Ep.1/

why every aspiring author needs a book coach

What is a book coach?

To explain what book coaching is, I want to open with a quote from Jennie Nash, the CEO of Author Accelerator, where I have been learning how to be a book coach.

“A book coach is like a personal trainer for your writing life.” — Jennie Nash, Author Accelerator CEO

Book coaching is:

  • Having a support person

  • Having someone to help you master outlining, plot & structure

  • Having a second opinion on your WIP

  • Keeping you accountable to your goals and dreams

  • Encouraging you

Book coaching isn’t:

  • Someone to write the book for you (that’s a ghost writer)

  • Someone to edit your grammar (that’s what an editor is for)

  • A magic elixir for getting a publishing deal (sorry, there isn’t anything for that)

Book coaching is a relatively new term being thrown around these days, but the idea is that someone with experience in guiding another writer (and writing) comes alongside you and offers guidance, encouragement, and support as you discover and write your story.

Should I get a book coach?

When I work with a writer, I meet you where you are. Whether you’ve already outlined your story, if you’ve outlined it, but know there are problems, if you’ve never outlined, but you’ve written 15K and are now stuck, or if you’ve written the entire manuscript and just need to know what works and what you need to revise.

These are all things that a book coach can help you with.

The wonderful thing about coaching is that it’s tailored to your needs. If you like to use the Save the Cat outlining method, or the Snowflake method or the 3 Act Structure, a book coach can work with you on those methods, as well as offering you other techniques to try.

Book coaching is absolutely worth it for the aspiring writer. Yes, you can learn a lot by just stumbling around, getting feedback from other writers, and taking your time. But none of us know how much time we have or who needs the story we are writing right now.

A book coach is the perfect way to accelerate your writing journey and get that idea out of your head and fully fleshed out on paper.
